San Diego Residents Excited to Learn About Their New Underwater Parks!
"Meet Your New Underwater Parks" Event on February 4th.
More than 60 people from San Diego County joined WiLDCOAST at the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center on Saturday February 4th to learn more about The California Department of Fish and Game’s new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): our underwater parks. Attendees included two-dozen students from Southwest High School, 15 members from the scuba diving group “Power Scuba,” as well as residents from Tijuana, Mex.
The event was organized by WiLDCOAST and The Tijuana River Estuary. We held a great discussion with the community, and participants learned about the different MPAs located throughout San Diego County and the recovery of marine ecosystems. As a treat, gift cards for surfing lessons, kayak tours, and tickets to the Birch Aquarium were raffled off to the public.
During the second part of the event, Dr. Octavio Aburto from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography joined the event and discussed the success story of Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Dr. Aburto’s lecture was not only educational but it inspired residents in San Diego to take action to help protect their very own underwater parks in California. After the talks, attendees enjoyed a walk through the Tijuana Estuary to learn more about the ecology of the estuary and how it’s connected to the newly establish Tijuana River Mouth State Marine Conservation Area in Imperial Beach.
