Marine Conservation Program Internship

WiLDCOAST is an international conservation team that conserves coastal and marine ecosystems and wildlife.
Description of the Internship:
The Marine Conservation Program is a WiLDCOAST campaign to help to foster community participation and support for the implementation of the newly establish Marine Protected Area network (MPA) in San Diego County. Duties may include outreach and education with stakeholders about the establishment of MPAs in San Diego County, encouraging marine recreation activities within the MPAs, and office related support for the Marine Conservation Program. An ideal candidate for this position is someone passionate about the environment and who enjoys working with the community.
Interns will help to conduct community outreach in San Diego to build public awareness about San Diego’s Marine Protected Areas. Interns will participate in organizing events such as cleanups, community outreach events, scheduling and offering classroom presentations, and other community related functions both in and outdoors. Interns will also assist with a community based data collection and MPA monitoring project called MPA Watch to study how the community uses the MPAs and its compliance with the new regulations.
Length of Commitment: Approximately 2-3 months
Location: WiLDCOAST Office in Imperial Beach. Access to a personal vehicle a big plus as interns may not drive WiLDCOAST vehicles.
Qualifications
Junior or Senior majoring in Marine Policy, Marine Biology, Environmental Studies, Environmental Education, or other related field
Energetic, outgoing and enthusiastic
Willing to work with diverse ages and in diverse communities
Self-motivated and independent thinking
Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively
Passionate about environmental conservation and outdoor recreation
Experience conducting surveys and in site research
Knowledge of data entry and good research skills
Experience with social media tools such as: Facebook, Twitter, blog posts, Flickr, etc.
Good computer skills, experience working on a MAC platform
Experience working with MS Office (Word, Excel)
Verbal and written fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred
Must be available to work weekends
